REVIEW: JEFF SOTO ‘STORM CLOUDS’

The other day I came home and found the most amazing package on my porch. Inside this package was a copy of the 2008 book ‘Storm Clouds’ by Jeff Soto. This hardcover, 154 page book features over 264 images of many works of art by Jeff up until the 2008 time frame. There is a very funny intro provided by David Choe and also commentary provided by Peter Frank (Senior Curator of Riverside Art Museum), Jeff Soto and Mark Murphy (The Publisher) throughout the book. The book also features a full color cover with, for lack of a better word, translucent details all over the cover.

This book catches your attention right away with a very beautiful piece of Jeff’s signature style wrapped all over the cover. As soon as I picked up ‘Storm Clouds’ I could tell that it was a very high quality book. From the deatiled cover to the thickness of each page I could tell that the team had put together an awesome product. This book also required specialty printing techniques and I beleave that might be why the color are so vibrant in every one of Sooto’s pieces that are featured.

This book is not only made well but Jeff’s work that is featured is very strong as well. The book features many different styles from Jeff including drawings, paintings, and sketchs across many different mediums. One of my favorite parts of the book is at the end where details for each show, lecture, and work of art by Jeff is outlined. It is very nice to be able to referance when and where each of these works were availbe or on display.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone that is a fan of Jeff’s work. But, ‘Storm Clouds’ would also be a great introduction for anyone that may just be discovering this awesome artist. It is a great way to look back at many of the inspiering pieces that Jeff has created over the years and see how versitile he really is. The book retails for $42 and I would say that the quality of this book makes it well worth that price.
